Members selected for the bomb squad must have completed three years with the department and pass a physical agility test and an oral board.
New members have to complete the six week FBI Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama. This course is designed to familiarize officers with the tools and equipment that are used in this highly specialized field and provides the basic skills necessary to become a bomb technician.
All members of the Billings squad belong to the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators. Each member must re-certify every three years.
Bomb squad members train 20 hours a month as a team. They also have on-going training in the area of explosives and weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
