    April 15, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM @ Library 1st floor Community Room

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Naylor highlights the lives and work of Elizabeth Van Lew (a Southern belle and Union spy), Colonel Ely S. Parker (a Seneca chief, one of Grant’s top aides, negotiator with tribes in the West, and the first American Indian to serve as Commissioner of Indian Affairs), and John Washington (an escaped slave who served in the U.S. Army and became one of the emergent middle class African-Americans after the war). All three are fascinating people who led regular lives but did extraordinary things. The presentation uses photos, discussion, music, supplemental reading suggestions, and laughter to tell their stories. A composition for band featuring the life and times of each person is available and can be performed either by high school or community band, or by recording. Presented by Craig Naylor of Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau. Sponsored by Humanities Montana and the Billings Public Library. No registration required.
