  2. Walt Whitman & the Civil War

    April 8, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM @ Library 1st Floor Community Room

This readers’ theater performance/reading based on the poetry, prose, journals, and letters of Walt Whitman moves from the election of Abraham Lincoln to the heady onset of the Civil War, from battlefield to hospital ward, through the long years in between to the conflict’s end and the death of Lincoln. The Civil War is one of the central experiences of our country; it not only preserved the Union but redefined the ideals that governed that Union. Whitman, as poet, nurse, and journalist, was its witness who thought “the real war would never get in books.” Revisit and rediscover this enduring American experience through the language of Walt Whitman. Open-ended discussion of the material and the literary, contemporary, and historical questions and issues it invokes follows the presentation. --Presented by Dave Caserio of the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau. Sponsored by Humanities Montana and the Billings Public Library. No registration required.
