K-9
Overview
The Billings Police Department has five K-9 patrol teams. The unit is supervised by a Sergeant who is also a K-9 Officer. The dogs utilized by the department are Belgian Malinois.

Training & Certification
The K-9 Officers and dogs are certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA). This training is approximately six weeks in length. The K-9 Officers and their dogs train on a weekly basis and certify annually.

Responsibilities & Services
The Canine teams work regular uniform patrol in their assigned area and respond to assist for: 
  • Alarm calls
  • Building searches
  • Article searches
  • Suspect tracking
  • Area and building searches for suspects
  • Narcotics
  • Officer safety assists

Canine officers may also assist on other police calls but they try to stay available for calls where their dog might be deployed. Canine teams also participate in many civic functions and educational demonstrations throughout the year.
